Chicks, Lady Chicks defeat the FC Mustangs

BLYTHEVILLE - The Blytheville Chickasaws defeated the Forrest City Mustangs, 74-47, on Friday night in a 5A East conference matchup.

The Chicks led the Mustangs,17-15 after the first quarter of play. The Chicks stretched its lead when at 3:24 left in the first half, Chickasaw senior guard A.J. Love threw down a dunk that forced Forest City to call a timeout in an attempt to slow down the momentum. The Chicks led at that point, 31-22.

Finishing off the first half, senior guard Austin Phelan knocked down two of his four three-pointers on the night. After Phelan got the Chickasaw fans fired up and with the clock dwindling down, senior big man Josh Richardson hit a three pointer of his own that put the crowd into a frenzy. Blytheville took at 40-21 lead in to the halftime locker room.

Early in the final quarter of play, Chicks guard Tony Newmy missed a layup but Tydarius Pope came in for a big put back dunk to put the Chicks ahead, 54-37,and once again got the crowd up on their feet.

The Chickasaws outscored the Mustangs, 34-16, in the second half alone and won the game by a score of 74-47.

Leading the way for the Chickasaws in the win was Richardson with game-high 16 points. Also contributing for the Chicks was Love with 14 points, Phelan with 12 points (four three-pointers) and sophomore forward Winston Peace with 11 points.

Trajon Norment, Mustang senior guard, led the Mustangs with 11 points.

The Chicks will next travel to Jonesboro to play the Jonesboro Hurricanes who are ranked 14th in the Nation by Max Preps. The Hurricanes defeated the Chickasaws, 61-44, on January 17.

Blytheville Lady Chickasaws 54, Forrest City Lady Mustangs 42

The Blytheville Lady Chickasaws defeated the Forrest City Lady Mustangs, 54-42, on Friday night in a 5A East conference matchup.

The Lady Chicks were led by Kaitlyn Thomas and Laurissa Campbell with 13 points apiece. Also contributing for the Lady Chicks in the victory was Dawn Anderson with eight points.

Leading the way for the Lady Mustangs in the loss was Keamber Appleby with 12 points.

Coach Melissa Young's Lady Chicks will travel to Jonesboro on Tuesday to play the Jonesboro Lady Hurricanes.
