Rave reviews for 'On Golden Pond'

To the editor:

Blytheville's Laura Martin found the old script in a used book store many years ago and wanted to stage "On Golden Pond" to honor her aunt, Hallene Gauden, and her mother-in-law, Mary Martin, who had lost their battle with Alzheimer's disease. Laura had called our office in Little Rock to tell us about her desire and wanted to pledge the proceeds to Alzheimer's Arkansas.

Witt and Patsy Smith generously hosted the event at their lovely home with pond, and ushered guests from their parking spots in golf carts. The talented cast under Laura's direction would have made playwright Ernest Thompson proud.

Danna Darty's portrayal of Ethyl Thayer's struggle with life mirrored the juggling match of aging and the attempts to appease the old memories while reality constantly interrupts.

Mark Terry's rendition of Norman was real. Norman's forgetfulness and fear were genuine, as was his ability to cope with what remained. It is this uncanny ability to weave the old memories with the love and devotion we have for them that leaves many families in denial.

Charlie the postman, Chelsea the daughter, her beau and his son were portrayed by equally talented area residents. Each delightful.

Following a standing ovation, numerous members of the audience voiced their approval of the play. One man said, "They told me this was amateurs, but they are professionals."

Visiting with members of the audience during the intermission and following the performance was an opportunity to visit and hear wonderful stories about their memories of workshops Alzheimer's Arkansas presented in Blytheville and the support group we sponsored there. Numerous people shared the benefits received and I thanked each one.
