MLK Jr. deserves better than Ash Street

Thursday, March 27, 2014

To the editor:

When I first heard of the suggestion to rename Ash Street into Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, my immediate reaction was, "I would be ashamed to name that street for Dr. King or any other any famous historic person."

Now that it seems there is a sizable group of citizens who want to pursue this project, I ask them to take a good look at Ash Street. It is lined with empty-looking run-down properties, a historic church that is falling down and a long-unfinished overpass that will soon take major traffic off Ash Street and make it an even less important street.

Renaming Ash Street would be an insult rather than an honor to Dr. King. Please reconsider.
