Republicans out to disenfranchise black, Hispanic voters

Wednesday, April 3, 2013

To the editor:

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe vetoed the Republican photo ID bill. This photo ID bill was a bad bill. Gov. Beebe did the right thing.

In some of our states, the photo ID bill has been blocked by the court, because it was designed to disenfranchise the black and Hispanic vote. When asked the Republicans why they wanted a photo ID, their answer was that it will eliminate fraud. What fraud? Since Arkansas is the third poorest state in the union, I'm sure the Republicans could come up with a better bill than a photo ID bill.

Well, let me help you out. What about a job bill? The Republican Party will never win another presidential election, because of their policies and rhetoric. You got to change with the times. I'm for a two-party system, and I have voted for Republican candidates, but not the ones I see today. The Republican Party said that they are going to give their party a facelift by changing their negative attitude toward blacks, Hispanics and women. ... Well, just one week ago, Rep. Don Young called the Hispanics "wetbacks," a word that is offensive. In my opinion, your party is too synthetic. In states across this country, Republicans are trying to come up with laws to disenfranchise the black and Hispanic vote, but at the same time are saying they need their vote. Well, you can't have it both ways. If having a photo ID, then eliminating early voting and Sunday voting is good for the voting process, it seems to me like the Democrats would jump on this concept. Well, this concept is nothing but Jim Crow.

The Jim Crow laws were an insult against black people. These laws made it possible for states to treat blacks unequally in all respects.

Another Arkansas law that I disagreed with was a law passed to allow concealed guns to be carried into the house of worship. They claim that churches were a target that deserved to be protected. I thought Christ was the head of the church, and our protector. If Satan wants to attack your church with a gun, do you think your guns will stop him? This is what Satan works on, our fear. Saints of God should not have the spirit of fear. I am so glad that I'm a member of a local church that don't teach this kind of fear.
