Gosnell (9-10, 4-6 3-4A) trailed by just a point heading into the fourth period and tied the game with a free throw to open the period but Pocahontas outscored the Lady Pirates, 29-9, the rest of the way for the victory.
Pocahontas won the game essentially at the free throw line. The Lady Redskins converted on 16 of their 18 attempts in the fourth period alone, including an 8-8 performance from guard Laura Junkersfeld.
Gosnell trailed, 15-12, at the end of the first period with 10 of its 12 points coming from Kemahri Soward. Soward scored a game-high 25 points to go along with four blocked shots, five rebounds and five steals.
The Lady Pirates trailed by six midway through the second before a couple of baskets from Soward and Sarah Wright tied the game at 20-20 with 2:21 to play. Soward gave the Pirates a 22-20 lead but Pocahontas bounced back and took a 24-23 lead into the break at halftime.
The game bounced back and fourth through the third. The Redskins managed to break out to a five-point advantage at 32-27 with 3:10 to play but Soward scored six of the next eight Pirate points down the stretch. Her sweeping bucket across the lane as time expired in the third cut the Pocahontas lead to 34-33 heading into the fourth.
Junkersfeld took over in the fourth, from the foul line. She scored 10 of her 17 points in the period with eight of them coming from the charity stripe on eight attempts. Her two foul attempts with 4:26 to play gave the Lady Redskins a 48-36 lead and Gosnell never threatened again.
For the game, Soward led the Lady Pirates with 25.
Junkersfeld led the Lady Redskins with 17 and Kylee Kirk scored 11.
The Lady Pirates head to Brookland on Thursday to take on the Lady Bearcats.
The Gosnell Junior Lady Pirates came back from a double-digit deficit at halftime to trail by only two with minutes remaining but the Pocahontas Junior Lady Redskins held on for a 38-34 victory Monday night.
Gosnell trailed 4-3 at the end of one and 19-9 at halftime before slicing the lead in half at 23-18 heading into the fourth.
Khrishona Hill led the Lady Pirates with 17 points and Lauren Rogers chipped in 10.
