Gosnell's Josh Lammers fights for the ball Tuesday night against Piggott. The Pirates routed the Mohawks, 61-29 in their last game before opening up the 3-4A conference season Friday night against Westside.

GOSNELL -- Behind a stifling defense and a strong offensive showing in the second half, the Gosnell Pirates routed the visiting Piggott Mohawks, 61-29, Tuesday night at the Gosnell Physical Education Building.

Gosnell (1-0) forced 15 Mohawk turnovers in the first half and then held them to just three second half field goals as the Pirates turned an eight-point advantage with three minutes left in the first half into a 23-point advantage by the end of the third period.

"It's all about the defense," said Pirate head coach Kirk Glintborg. "It's what I've been preaching and I thought all of the kids stepped up and did a better job tonight."

Gosnell jumped out to a 20-9 lead at the end of the first period as the Pirates moved the ball through their offense with much more efficiency then last Thursday night against Nettleton. Pirate point guard Tre Howe dished out four of his eight assists in the period as four of the five starters got in the score book including seven from senior forward, Richard Razor.

"He (Howe) did a much better job of distributing the ball tonight," said Glintborg. "He's (Howe) one of those guys who can lead us in scoring one night and assists the other."

Tuesday night Howe did both. His 21 points led both teams and nearly matched the entire Piggott offense.

His bucket with two minutes left in the first period was the last points either team scored for the next six minutes of play. The Pirates didn't score another field goal until Will Rose (nine points) hit a jumper in the lane with three minutes to play in the half to put the Pirates up 10 at 23-13. That sparked an 11-2 run for Gosnell to end the half. With time ticking down in the first half, Rod Jones stole the ball away from the Mohawks, dished it off to Howe on the break who laid the ball in as time expired in the first half with Gosnell taking a 32-15 lead into the break.

Howe opened things up in the second half by hitting a three-pointer and Richard Razor (11 points and seven rebounds) followed with a layup as Gosnell opened up a 22-point advantage at 37-15 and Piggott never challenged again.

"That was huge to begin the second half," said Glintborg. "We talked about coming out and continuing where we left off."

Overall, starting with three minutes left in the second period through the end of the third period, the Pirates outscored the Mohawks, 23-9, and led 45-22 heading into the fourth.

Gosnell didn't allow Piggott to score more than nine points in any period.

Glintborg used the fourth period to get some playing time for the rest of his squad.

Center Allen Montezuma (eight points) stepped up and hit two three-pointers and had a blocked shot in the period.

"We run an offense with a high post for the centers. We've got a couple of kids in Will (Rose) and Montezuma who can step out and hit those shots. That's going to be huge for us."

The Pirates open the 3-4A conference season Friday night at Westside.
