Ignite readying annual "Boxes of Love" program

Saturday, November 10, 2012

The local charity Ignite's "Boxes of Love" project for Christmas 2012 has officially begun, and individuals and groups have until the first of December to contribute.

Last year, Ignite provided more than 800 families with a "Box of Love," and gave out 2,000 toys -- overall serving around 3,500 individuals in the Blytheville area. A box contains enough non-perishable food items to sustain a family of four for up to a week, and comes with an additional box of personal hygiene items. Each box, which is provided by Feed the Children, costs $20.

In addition to financial contributions for purchasing food boxes, Ignite is collecting toys to be distributed to the families it serves who have children. Toy drop off boxes have been set up at Northeast Arkansas Federal Credit Union, Mailboxes and Beyond, all Southern Bancorp branches, Great River Medical Center, SouthBank, Arkansas Northeastern College, Fred's Dollar Store and the Mississippi County Courthouse.

An easy way to contribute, according to Ignite Chairman Danny Rigney, is to participate in the opening night of the Lights of the Delta Christmas light display on the airbase. Opening night is Nov. 19, and all vehicles will be admitted for a donation of money or a toy, and all proceeds will go to Ignite.

Two sign-up days will be held this year for families wishing to receive a box and/or toys from Ignite, on Nov. 27 and 29 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Blytheville School district's service center on Highway 18.

Distribution of the food and toys will take place at the service center on Dec. 15, beginning at 9 a.m.

Donations to Ignite are tax-deductible, and can be sent to P.O. Box 466, Blytheville, AR 72316. For more information about partnering with Ignite, contact Danny Rigney at 870-763-4561.
