Gosnell mayor wrong to veto mosquito measure

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

To the editor:

I am writing this in regard to a recent veto by the mayor of the city of Gosnell.

Recently, he has vetoed the efforts of the city council (twice) to maintain mosquito control for the city. According to the Center for Disease Control, over 30,000 people have been infected by West Nile since 1999, and in 2012 alone, there have been 1,118 cases of West Nile Virus. There have been 41 reported deaths this year because of this terrible sickness and the Gosnell mayor still thinks i's a smart move to get rid of this much-needed asset to the city.

Mosquitoes are terrible in Mississippi County. Just imagine how bad it would be if we didn't have the mosquito truck in our town spraying.

I would like to personally thank the ladies of the Gosnell City Council for listening to the people and for standing up to a part-time mayor that thinks that saving a few bucks will get him re-elected.
