City needs to cut spending, not raise the sales tax

Thursday, February 9, 2012

To the editor:

Finally we get some answers -- the money was not stolen, but we can not tell where it went. As far as we can tell, it went to pay for other city bills. The city spends more every year than it takes in. So it seems pretty obvious to me that we don't need to bail out the city with a tax on the citizens. We need to cut spending. If not, in a few years, we will be back at it again, wanting to pass another tax.

The bus station, Kress Building, golf course, Nuway recycling and any other endeavors that can't support themselves need to be shut down. Donating money that we don't have needs to stop. We cannot keep spending what we don't have.

If I don't pay my light bill, no one comes and bails me out. My lights are turned off. We can't keep putting a band-aid on a gunshot wound -- sooner or later you bleed to death. That's what a tax will be. Let's try to hold on to some things that are failing miserably. That's not very good advice. There comes a time when you have to cut your losses and shut it down.

Taxes are too high now. The water company charges us too much for water. Groceries are too high. Gas is too high. Everything is too high!

I will not vote for another tax, and I urge every citizen to get out and vote no. If I cannot spend more than I take in, why does the city get to do it? Who's going to bail me out?
