Letter to the Editor

Stealing from gravesites is shameful

Saturday, January 28, 2012

To the editor:

I am writing this to let people in Blytheville know about what happened during the month of December at the cemetery.

Wreathes and floral arrangements were stolen off of the graves at the cemetery there at Willow and Division.

I had taken wreaths for those in our family early so that they could be pretty throughout the season. I took them around Dec. 1.

On Dec. 12, I got a phone call from the relative there telling me that they had been taken Sunday, Dec. 11. When I called, I was told that other wreaths and flowers had also been taken that Sunday.

I talked to the police, and they said that they were not aware that this was happening and that they would do what they could to monitor the grounds during the holidays.

I hope that there is power in the printed word and that all the good folks there in Blytheville will keep watch so that the cemetery can be a sacred and respected place.

What a shame that people would stoop so low as to steal from the dead.

I have written to the mayor and chief of police asking them to see that the grounds are monitored closely during the month of December to assure that this does not happen again this year.

And so I have done all that I can do.
