Jewell Maxine Rice-Carr

Mrs. Jewell Maxine Rice-Carr, 89, of Cleveland, Ark., passed away Monday, Dec. 19, 2011.

After graduating from Blytheville High School, she served in the U.S. Navy Waves in Hutchinson and Kaneohe Naval Air Station in Hawaii during WWII. Upon receiving a certificate in fine arts from Memphis Academy of Arts, she worked for Memphis Publishing Company for 13 years, and spent another two years at Arma Advertising Specialties as a commercial artist in Dallas. She retired after 12 years as a commercial artist for the Dallas Morning News.

Jewell's retirement years were spent volunteering at St. Anthony's Hospital Auxiliary and Literary Coterie Women's Club in Morrilton. She had an in depth knowledge of politics, and wrote several articles for the Morrilton newspaper and the Arkansas Democrat Gazette, along with painting in her spare time.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Naomi Young Rice and Louis L. Rice of Blytheville; three sisters, Odie Herring of Memphis, Irene Barber of Harrisonville, and Thelma Putman of Hot Springs; and one step-daughter, Patricia Carr-Maxwell of Cleveland.

She leaves her husband, Jerome Carr, and his children, Joan Gail Carr, John Dale Carr, and Brenda Jo Carr, all of Cleveland, Diann Carr Moody of Lonoke, Darold Carr of Cleveland, and Viola Lynn Carr Mourot of Morrilton;

Step-children from marraige to Ralph Radford Tillman, Rosemary Larkin of Newborn, Deborah Heath of Durango, and Alice Fisher of Covington;

Three sisters, Louise Hartwig of Shawnee Mission, Irma Branit of Fairway, and Dorothy Hyde of Blytheville; and

One brother, Donald Rice of Little Rock.

Graveside services, officiated by Chaplin Don Erwin, were held Thursday, Dec. 22, 2011, at Vinson Chapel Cemetery.

Arrangements were by Harris Funeral Home of Morriton. The family would like to thank Dr. Stephen Carter, the staff of River Chase Rehabilitation and Care Center in Morrilton, and Arkansas Hospice for the comfort and care provided during her seven-week stay.
