Man searching for lost love

Friday, March 18, 2011

To the editor:

In 1956, I was stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga. At that time I met a lovely light-haired girl who was in the WACS at the same base. We fell in love and for several months we reveled in that love.

However, as a sergeant in Co. 133 Signal Co., I was sent TDY to Puerto Rico and then on from there. For three months, I was not allowed to receive or send mail because of the kind communications I was doing. We lost connect with each other.

Two years after I was discharged, I received a very old letter from Pvt. Virginia Joyce Carter postmarked January,1957. It had never caught up to me because of the Army's security apparatus. She thought I had abandoned her, and sadly this was far from true. She said she was from the Blytheville, Ark., area, her name was Virginia Joyce Carter, and also that her cousin was June Carter Cash, Johnny Cash's wife.

If you know of her, past or present, please contact the newspaper or me, Charles Whitcome at e-mail address cwhitcome@frontiernet.net.
