Local spelling bee a success

Wednesday, February 16, 2011

To the editor:

On behalf of the Spelling Bee Council of Mississippi County, I would like to thank all those who made our competition possible. Twenty-eight students from throughout our county participated in the annual spelling bee held on the Arkansas Northeastern College campus in the Adams-Vines Recital Hall on Feb. 1.

Tony Garth of Blytheville Middle School was the first-place winner and will represent Mississippi County at the state spelling bee in Little Rock on March 19. Second- and third-place winners were Louis Lammers of Gosnell Elementary and Mercedes Elliott of Rivercrest Junior High.

This educational activity would not be possible without the support of ANC. Thank you Dr. Robin Myers, Becky Sullivan, Bronwyn Morgan and Lori Boesen for coordinating and handling the setup.

Our generous patrons help provide trophies for each student, savings bonds for the winners and money for transportation and lodging for the first-place winner and his family. Many thanks are extended to Adams Land Company of Leachville, Lee Wilson and Company, Liberty Bank of Monette, Farmers Bank and Trust of Blytheville, Hubbard and Hoke Furniture of Blytheville and Osceola, Walmart and Diane Wagner of Manila.

I would also like to thank the judges, Mary Tom Vermillion, Jennifer White and Idell Jenkins, and the members of the Spelling Bee Council for their tireless work: Joy Skelton, Melissa Rutherford, Rick Vermillion, Tim Bassing Diane Wagner and our pronouncer, Karen Burks.

Jill Hubbard
Mississippi County Spelling Bee chairwoman
