Letter to the Editor

Cleaning up Mississippi County

Tuesday, February 15, 2011

To the editor:

This letter is intended for all the citizens of Mississippi County.

This is in regard of the story in the Courier News on Feb. 15 about the Sheriff's plan to purchase patrol vehicles. According to the story, there is one justice of the peace that believes the Sheriff Department and working deputies are not in need of this equipment. I say, maybe we as citizens would like to inspect or ride around in some of the patrol cars and experience first-hand what we as citizens of Mississippi County give our deputies to protect and serve our County?

One Justice of the Peace says; "he was concerned because citizens he had spoken with were not in favor of such a large purchase." Justice of the peace, you haven't spoken to me or any of the large group of Mississippi County citizens that I've been talking with. If you would like to meet with them, let me know -- I'm very easy to find in the community and will have them meet with you.

The same justice of the peace says, "If this fails, it's going to come back on everyone that's at this table." I just wonder if that justice of the peace considers this very statement on all of our Quorum Court's issues?

The truth is, justice of the peace, you, the sheriff, myself, our families and citizens of Mississippi County have a problem. It's not the sheriff, it's not the deputies, and it's not the majority of citizens of our county. It's called crime and drugs, and believe it or not, it is a vicious cycle that can only be broken by new techniques, tools and ideas. Our county needs to move forward! Personal issues are ignorant and have no place when it comes to the safety of citizens of Mississippi County.

The majority of Mississippi County citizens have spoken and voted for our new sheriff who ran his campaign on the basis to do what ever he had to do to rid this county of the very things that affect us all, especially our children and their future.

He has a plan to help us build a confident and trustworthy Sheriff's Department by adding deputies, tools and training that are needed so they can perform their duties to the best of their abilities in protecting and serving our large county.

If we as Mississippi County citizens truly want less crime in the county, fewer drugs in the county, less stealing from our homes, farms and businesses in our county, then we owe it to our sheriff and deputies to make sure they have the support, equipment, tools and training to go forward with our sheriff's plan.

We can't wait for tomorrow, anymore. Thanks for your time and God Bless our County!
