Letter to the Editor

Opposition must not be silenced

Friday, January 21, 2011

To the editor:

This letter concerns a commentary on "a better Region Eight" on that aired January 13 on KAIT Channel 8 TV. In this commentary, authors introduced an idea, as have others in the news media, that there are those, namely Sarah Palin and others (presumably meaning anyone who speaks out against the status quo), who are "stirring up the people" with their rhetoric concerning the direction the powers that be are taking our nation. Also, it has been suggested that this had something to do with the shooting in Arizona, and should be quenched. Of course, the quenching idea has occurred to the president, the FCC, and others who are no doubt trying to figure out a way to do it.

Now I have never condoned violence, especially murder or assassination or attempts there-at, nor anything that endangers human life.

However, as for the information passed down by the few conservative people with the guts to speak up, it is critical to the life of our nation. Many of the things that go on in the capital on a daily basis make a normal thinking person sick, and most of these would go unchallenged were it not for the aforementioned persons. We need these folks not to rile us up to do bodily harm, but to pep us up to involvement and action.

There is too much greed in high places, so many buyouts and sellouts and bailouts with money borrowed from our great-grandchildren, I don't know if the nation can recover or not. If it is to stand a chance, we must return to the values of ethics, morality, thrift, self-denial and justice which were demonstrated in past years when the nation was strong and respected by other countries and was prospering.

Instead of faulting the people who are speaking out and wishing they would go away, I think we should applaud them and pay attention to their warnings.

One of the first steps in forming a totalitarian regime is to silence the opposition. Let us not take that road.
