Poffs gather for reunion
The Poffs' youngest daughter, Donna, and her husband, Henry (Hank) Hayles, hosted again the annual family Thanksgiving in their home in Moody, Ala. Three of Donna's four sisters came, being Carlene Baker from Murfreesboro, Tenn., Bonnie Saliba from Michie, Tenn., and Mavis Trombly, from Sanford, Fla. Their other sister, Patricia Fann, who lives in O'Fallon, Mo, could not attend this year.
Others who attended (besides Donna, Hank, Carlene, Bonnie and Mavis) were the Hayles' daughter and family from Knoxville, Tenn., Regina, husband John Foy, and their son, Austin; Mavis' husband and grandson, Denver and Nicholas, and Carlene's clan of 10: daughter, Lisa; son-in-law Bill Fee; grandson Andy, granddaughter Ashley, granddaughter Rachel and husband Shaun Myrick, and their infant son Gideon, and grandson Joshua and wife Matyka, and their infant son William (Will).
Everyone enjoyed the bounty of the buffet, filling their plates and scattering to dining places in the formal dining room, at the table in the eat-in kitchen, and at tables in the sunroom.
The rest of the day was spent "huddling" for catch-up conversation and "cuddling" the new additions to the family, Gideon and Will, as they passed from one pair of arms to another. Also cameras flashed now and then, interrupting conversation or whatever. One of the highlights of the event is the sisters' giving and receiving gifts to and from each other, and they did it again, "oohing" and "aahing" over their presents.
Two of the guys were seen right after the meal garbed in camouflaged hunting attire in readiness for takeoff to the deer camp -- the guys being John and Austin Foy.
Soccer team ace, 14-year-old Austin, bagged his second deer (the first time was last year). It was an 8-point buck.
While Carlene and family and Regina left that evening, Bonnie and the Tromblys stayed overnight and left the next day for their homes.
Recreation included a "skipping" frolic participated in by Bonnie, Mavis, Donna, Hank and Denver, and many games of Mexican Train Dominoes, which was a first time to play for Bonnie, who wound up winning every game!
One topic of conversation was the good news that John's and Regina's son, U.S. Army Pvt. Harrison Foy, would get a Christmas leave from his boot camp in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., to spend time with his family, who will gather again at Donna's and Hank's festively decorated home for the celebration.
Three of the sisters -- Carlene, Bonnie and Donna -- talked about their upcoming plans to attend the Annual Poff Cousins Reunion in Gosnell, again the weekend before Christmas, at which their other sister Patricia from Missouri will join them.
All in all, Thanksgiving in Alabama was a grand time for the Carl and Albie Poff Family members who could gather again and connect. Every year there is a different crowd. The 20 who attended were about half of the family, counting spouses, kids and grandkids.
