Local sports teams preparing for their seasons (07/23/16)
With summer being a slow season in the sports department here at the Courier, local high school sports are gearing up for their seasons in their respective sports. I know my alma matter at Armorel has already started doing summer basketball camps and just finished with Legion ball for baseball, also both Blytheville and Gosnell have already started preparing for football, with practices and two-a-days about to start up. ...
Successful summer for the Casons (07/22/16)
The Blytheville Hardy Sales and Services Casons finished the 2016 American Legion season at 15-9. They finished the regular season at 14-7 and 5-1 in zone play. Their only loss in zone came to Mountain Home in the second game of a doubleheader. The Casons would advance to the state tournament in Conway where they won one game and loss two games to end the successful summer...
Former players honor Coach Wright (07/20/16)
On Friday night, former players and local dignitaries celebrated the distinguished career of former legendary Blytheville High School football coach Larry Wright at the Ritz Civic Center. The crowd included Mayor James Sanders, Blytheville High School athletic director David Hixson, former BHS athletic director Bill Mayo and many players from the 1973 Chickasaw club that went 10-0 in the regular season under Coach Wright...
Coach Wright lead Chicks to 10-0 mark (07/16/16)
Gary Briley had to chuckle when he watched "The Junction Boys," a film about legendary college football coach Bear Bryant's rigorous offseason program at Texas A&M before the 1954 season. Briley was the Arkansas Defensive Player of the Year in 1973, the last Chickasaw team to go undefeated in the regular season until the 2007 Chicks...
'Heroes get remembered, but legends never die' (07/15/16)
In the last few years many people I admired growing up as a young sports fan have either passed away or moved on to the next chapter in their life, the life of retirement. There has been the announcement of Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant retiring, Muhammad Ali leaving this old world way too early, and David " Big Papi" Ortiz retiring at the end of the baseball season. The sports world is a lot different than just a few years ago when I really started being old enough to know and watch sports...
Casons stay perfect in zone play (07/08/16)
The Blytheville Hardy Sales and Services improved their record to 4-0 in zone play and 13-6 overall, after a 14-4 victory over the Jonesboro Ricemen on Thursday night at the Blytheville Youth Sportsplex. After two innings of work, the Casons led 3-0 on the Ricemen. After the fourth inning the Casons led 10-4 and, in the fifth inning, they scored four more runs to invoke the 10-run rule...
Barbaree hopes to bring discipline to Gosnell football (06/28/16)
The Gosnell Pirates will start this year's football season with a new head coach. The Gosnell School board voted Monday night to hire Brandon Barbaree. Barbaree will replace Gary Moody, who is moving to Batesville South-Side. Barbaree graduated from Watson Chapel High School (Pine Bluff, Ark.) in May of 1998. ...
